Topic: Baking cookies
Objective: New vocabulary
Students will be able to repeat new vocabulary words clearly. They will be able to identify 75% of the vocabulary words when they are spoken by the teacher. They will be able to recall the word by themselves 50% of the time.
Outline:
Introduction | Ask a question or two that brings up the topic, that the students can easily answer by themselves, and that gets them interested. | This can be as simple as asking if the students like cookies. |
I do | Using flashcards or slides, show a picture along with the word. Give an example to put the new word into context. (I put butter on my bread. Do I put butter in my water? No!) | Students are not expected to know, or even to be able to read, the words at this stage. |
We do | Students listen and repeat the words. | The expectation is for the student to be able to pronounce the word clearly, as they are connecting the word, the picture, and the sound in their minds. |
You do | Show the pictures again either with or without the written word, depending on your students. I like to do it once with the word still there, and a second time without the word written at the bottom, gradually encouraging students to be more independent. | Students must rely on their memories to recall the words they just learned. **Note: I like to change the pictures for each round, so that it is not the same picture every time |
Read the story | There are several options at this stage.
| Choose the style that suits your class |
Game | Some options: Matching game—find the pairs Pictionary Charades | Ending with a game leaves the lesson on a high note, and it is still achieving the goal of reiterating the vocabulary words as many times as possible |
